What is ART?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based approach that helps individuals process distressing memories and experiences in a new way. When difficult memories are brought to mind, they can trigger painful emotions and physical responses. Using guided techniques, ART works to lessen this distress by helping the brain reprocess and store these memories differently, allowing many individuals to find lasting relief from associated symptoms.
How Can ART Help First Responders?
First responders are regularly exposed to traumatic events, critical incidents, and repeated high-stress situations that can accumulate over time; taking a toll on their emotional and physical well-being.
ART may help first responders process difficult experiences, reduce the emotional impact of distressing images, and manage symptoms associated with trauma.
What can I expect during an ART session?
During an ART session, your therapist guides you through side-to-side eye movements, known as bilateral stimulation, to promote relaxation and support the brain in processing a memory or experience you wish to address. Revisiting the memory in a safe, structured setting allows the brain to reshape distressing images and sensations. Many people find the memory becomes less upsetting and their emotional and physical responses more manageable. ART builds on the brain’s natural ability to process experiences, with your therapist providing guidance and support throughout the process.
